Discover Your High Street

Following the success of our events in July 2016, in the Autumn of 2016 The Streets Consortium and Serious embarked on a new component to The Streets, entitled Discover Your High Street.

Owing to the generous support of Heritage Lottery Fund, the project undertook an original research journey, revealing the last 100 years of history in our seven outer London High Streets: Ilford, Kingston, Leyton, South Norwood, Tooting, Twickenham, and Woolwich.

A team of dedicated volunteers conducted valuable research across the seven Boroughs, exploring the outer London High Streets as centres for industry and the home of companies such as Thermos, the Woolwich Building Society and the site of the first UK branch of McDonalds.

The impacts of growth, regeneration and the wars were explored, with many of the town centres expanding rapidly from the 19th century onwards. Many of these High Streets such as Tooting and Twickenham also played host to a range of stars throughout the twentieth century, including Frank Sinatra, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones.

Our findings have been showcased in a touring exhibition and heritage trails alongside a programme of community talks and workshops which were delivered during The Streets events in November.  The trails can be viewed by clicking on the links below:

In April 2017, we launched our Discover Your High Street Publication which thematically explores the shared heritage of the seven boroughs. The book is currently being shared free of charge to heritage partners, museums, schools, libraries and arts and heritage organisations in each of the boroughs. We are also delighted to be able to share this resource digitally, below.
